what is music therapy?

Music therapy is a clinical and evidenced-based use of music interventions to support individualized therapeutic goals. Services are provided by a Board-Certified music therapist and may be offered individually or in a group setting.

Music therapy is much more than listening to music or participating in musical entertainment. Each session is intentionally designed around the strengths, preferences, needs, and goals of those participating.

Depending on the individual or group, sessions may include:

  • singing and vocal experiences

  • playing instruments

  • movement to music

  • songwriting and lyric discussion

  • music-assisted relaxation

  • musical reminiscence

  • rhythm-based activities

  • creative self-expression

  • opportunities for choice-making and social interaction

No previous musical experience is necessary to participate or benefit from music therapy.

Potential Benefits of music therapy

Because services are individualized, the goals and possible benefits of music therapy will look different for every person. Music therapy may support:

  • communication and self-expression

  • social interaction and meaningful connection

  • emotional awareness and regulation

  • stress reduction and relaxation

  • attention, memory, and cognitive engagement

  • confidence and self-esteem

  • choice-making and independence

  • Fine and gross motor movement

  • sensory engagement and regulation

  • coping skills and emotional support

  • reminiscence and life review

  • overall wellness and quality of life

Music therapy does not replace medical, psychological, educational, or rehabilitative care. It may be used independently or as a part of a collaborative care plan with families, caregivers, educators, and other professionals.

Who may benefit?
